Creating interactive showpieces, branding integration and UX/UI for major community hub in Sunderland.

Our job was to develop a series of large, multipurpose interaction points controlled by a central CMS.

At various points within the event space we wanted to place interactive sculptures. These would be screen/projection driven, but it was important to us to try and blend this into the surroundings rather than presenting rigid rectangles.

Most of the pieces would be themed to their surroundings, however a temporary exhibition space required (a large square room) maximum flexibility in terms of content.

What we did

  • Temporary Exhibition Space: A 10m interactive wall/floor projection, paired with lighting and audio within the space that allows the whole environment to be changed. Branded seating that can easily be pushed aside means the space can be easily vacated.

  • CityEye Map: A digital floor curving into a wall, giving visitors both a head on and birds eye view of content. Protected by a wall of glass, the digital floor comprises of screens that can both display content and be used to backlight physical objects resting on it. A large dial allows users to control its content.

  • Multimedia bookcase: A shelving unit containing objects, screens and proximity sensors that transforms on approach. In its passive state, the screens inform visitors of where they are and what's on. On approach, it turns into a storytelling device, lighting up objects one by one and telling their stories. Detachable fascias on the screens allows for innovative ways of presenting sychronised digital content.

  • Touch Table: Allowing for wheelchair access, a touchscreen table that can be used for group interaction or as a secondary screen for an accompanying wall projection.

  • Branding: Integrated third party top level branding into a design system and applied across the various existing touchpoints.
